About Angela Longo

Dr. Angela Maliae Longo, Ph.D., C.A.

Acupuncture Clinic
…offering raw herbs,
acupuncture, biochemical
and energetic nutrition,
acupressure, moxibustion
and counseling.

I’ve lived in Hawaii for 27 years.
Prior to this I received a
Doctorate in Biochemistry from
UC Berkeley for research into
biochemical communication
between glial cells and neurons.
Glial cells being the “yin” portion of the
nervous system, have been only vaguely understood until recently.

I discovered an important biochemically mediated
role for them as “guides” in maturation and regeneration
for young or injured nerve cells. Since then, small proteins
called peptides (used by the nervous system) and glia have become prominent in the study of the nervous system. A whole new field in neurobiology was born after my research with peptides and
glial cells was published, and both have entered
the forefront in current neurobiologic studies.

In 1972, during my graduate studies, I met a ninth-generation Chinese medical doctor by the name of Lam Kong, who introduced me to the rich tradition of Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and nutrition. Since then he has been my primary teacher and mentor.

Angela Longo received her
Doctorate in Biochemistry
from UC Berkeley,
and her traditional training in Chinese Medicine
from Dr. Lam Kong, a teacher with a legacy of
ten generations in Chinese Medicine
.

With over 30 years experience as a
Licenced Practitioner, and an additional
35 years as a teacher, she brings
a wealth of knowledge to her practice
of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

I later became a professor at San Francisco State University and for five years participated in the creation of the first holistic health minor, integrating Eastern and Western principals. During my time at SF State, I developed a method for teaching herbs and acupuncture from traditional pulse and tongue patterns, and organ syndromes.

When I moved to Hawaii in 1981, I re-established my practice and began teaching selected students. Five years later I founded The Big Island College of Acupuncture with Herbal Medicine, later renamed The Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii at Dr. Kong’s suggestion. Over the course of the past seventeen years we have graduated forty-two acupuncturists skilled in the traditional use of the pulse and tongue diagnosis and raw herbs.

Influencing the movement of energy in the Channels by herbs, acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion (warming the acupuncture points) and intention, supports the life force and enables a person to direct the natural flow of one’s life. The situation is similar to a driver who is now operating an automobile that has undergone a tune-up. The herbs and nutrition are comparable to changing the oil and filling the gas tank!

The Big Island is a place where people are given the opportunity to reestablish their connection to themselves. In an atmosphere of aloha,
Surrounded by the beauty and strength of the Five Mountains, visitors can find peace and unconditional love. The Tao Te Ching supplies the underlying theme of Chinese Medicine, namely that the elemental forces of nature – starkly apparent on Hawaii Island – flow through us without judgement. By aligning with this force, without resistance or judgement, we nourish our destiny. If a person has an interest, I am further able to use symptoms, dreams, life events, relationships and desires to help uncover one’s life purpose. I have learned over the years that if one lives a purposeful life with an open mind, opportunities naturally arise for enjoyment and actualization.

I believe that all real healing modalities, including allopathic medicine, server to awaken the person to the fullness of one’s union with the Universe and to the expression of their loving and creative talents.

My treatments usually last two hours for the first visit and the $50 per hour plus herbs and nutritional supplements. Follow-up visits are one to one-and-one-half hours in length.
